How to Buy a Domain Through ChatGPT

Ask ChatGPT for domain name ideas and it is genuinely good at it. Ask whether any of them are free and it starts guessing, because a language model has no way to check. You end up with twenty lovely names and no idea which you can actually have.

Connecting a registrar fixes that. Once ChatGPT can reach OSIR, it checks real availability, quotes the real price, and registers the one you pick. Setup takes about two minutes and you do it once.

What you need

A ChatGPT plan that supports custom connectors, which today means Plus, Pro, Business or Enterprise. Developer Mode is where individual plans add their own servers, and it is off by default.

You do not need an OSIR account to start. Searching and pricing are anonymous. You only sign in at the point of buying something.

Connect it once

1. Turn on Developer Mode. Click your profile icon, open Settings, then Apps & Connectors. Scroll to Advanced Settings and switch Developer Mode on.

2. Add the connector. Still in Apps & Connectors, choose Create, and fill in:

Field Value
Name OSIR
Description Domain search, registration and DNS
Connector URL https://be.osir.com/mcp/http
Authentication None

3. Save. The tools register themselves. There is nothing to install and no API key to generate.

"None" for authentication is not a mistake. Lookups are genuinely anonymous, and when you later ask for something that needs an account, the sign-in happens inside the conversation. If you would rather stay signed in across chats, use https://be.osir.com/mcp/oauth instead, with the public client ID mcp-client.

Then just ask

You: I need a name for a travel blog about rainy days. Nothing twee. Check what's actually free.

ChatGPT: rainyfridays.com is available at $10.39 a year, which is $10.89 once the $0.20 ICANN fee and card processing are added. Three others you might like are taken. Want me to register it?

You: yes

ChatGPT: Registered to you until October 2027. DNS is set up and ready for you to point somewhere.

The difference from asking ChatGPT cold is that every name in that answer has been checked against the registry a second earlier, and the price is the real one rather than a guess.

What it can do once connected

Not just buying. The connector exposes the whole registrar, so the same conversation handles the jobs that normally mean logging into a control panel:

  • Check one name or sweep a keyword across hundreds of extensions
  • Register, renew and transfer
  • Create and edit DNS records
  • Set up mailboxes on the domain
  • Order a VPS and deploy something onto it

It is 106 tools in total. If you want the full list, the MCP page has it.

It asks before it spends

Worth knowing before you connect anything to a registrar: ChatGPT cannot quietly spend your money. Anything that costs something stops, shows you an itemised total, and waits for you to say yes. Registration, renewal, VPS orders, all of them. There is no setting that turns that off.

The honest limitation

Most other ways of doing this hand you back a link. You ask, the assistant finds the name, and then you get a URL that drops you into a checkout page to finish the job yourself. That works, but the useful part of the conversation ends right where the purchase begins.

A connector completes the purchase instead. The catch is that money still has to come from somewhere: either a balance you topped up earlier, or a payment method you granted your assistant in advance, which is newer and not everyone has one yet. If neither applies, you get a checkout link like anywhere else. That is still the common case today, and it is worth saying rather than discovering at the till.

If the connector does not appear

Two things account for almost every failure. Developer Mode is per-account and off by default, so check Advanced Settings again. And custom connectors are not on the free plan, so if the Create option is missing, that is why.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT really buy a domain for me?

Yes, once you connect a registrar it can reach. On its own it can suggest names but cannot check whether they are available or complete a purchase, because it has no connection to a registry.

Do I need an OSIR account first?

No. Searching and pricing work anonymously. You sign in only when you buy, and that happens inside the chat.

Which ChatGPT plans support this?

Custom connectors through Developer Mode are on Plus and Pro, with fuller capabilities on Business and Enterprise. The free plan cannot add custom connectors.

Is it safe to connect my registrar to ChatGPT?

Anything that spends money or deletes something stops and shows you the amount before it happens, and nothing proceeds without your explicit yes. Lookups need no account at all, so you can try it before signing in to anything.

Will it tell me the real price?

Yes, including fees. Quoted totals cover the $0.20 per year ICANN fee on gTLDs and payment processing, which is 3% or $0.30, whichever is greater.

Can I use Claude or another assistant instead?

Yes. The same connector works with Claude, Grok Build, Gemini CLI, OpenClaw, Hermes Agent and anything else speaking the same protocol. Meet the AI agents that can manage your domains covers the landscape.

What if I already own domains elsewhere?

You can transfer them in and then manage everything from the same conversation. You will need the auth code from your current registrar and the domain must be older than 60 days.
