How to Register a Domain with Claude, Start to Finish

Claude is good at naming things and hopeless at knowing whether the name is free. It has no connection to any registry, so when you ask whether quietferns.dev is available it either hedges or invents an answer.

Give it a connector and the hedging stops. It checks the registry, tells you the price including fees, registers the one you pick, and then sets up DNS and email on the same domain without you opening a control panel.

Setup is about two minutes, once.

Add the connector

Open Settings, then Connectors, then Add custom connector, and fill in:

Field Value
Name OSIR
Remote MCP server URL https://be.osir.com/mcp/http
Authentication No sign-in
Request headers leave empty

Click Add and you are done. "No sign-in" is correct: searching and pricing are anonymous, and when you later ask for something that touches your account, Claude shows you a link and a short code to sign in from inside the chat. There are no API keys anywhere in this.

Remote connectors work on every Claude plan, including free. If you want it to stay signed in between conversations, use https://be.osir.com/mcp/oauth with the public client ID mcp-client instead. Full walkthrough with screenshots: Connect OSIR to Claude.

The first conversation

You: I'm building a small plant identification app. Find me something available, nothing with "ai" shoved in it.

Claude: quietferns.dev is free at $12.00 a year, $12.50 once the $0.20 ICANN fee and card processing are added. bramblelane.com has gone. Four others I checked are taken.

You: take quietferns.dev

Claude: Before I register: quietferns.dev, two years, $25.00 total including fees. Confirm?

You: go ahead

Claude: Registered until October 2028. The DNS zone is set up. Want me to point it at a host or add email?

Every name in that exchange was checked against the registry a second before it was shown, and the price is the one you will actually be charged.

It stops before it spends

The confirmation step is not decoration. Registration, renewal, transfers, VPS orders and anything else that costs money all stage first: Claude receives an itemised summary, has to show it to you, and only proceeds once you say yes. An unconfirmed action never runs, and there is no setting that removes the step.

The same applies to destructive things. Deleting a DNS record or a mailbox asks first.

What else fits in the same conversation

The connector is the whole registrar rather than a search box, which is what makes it worth setting up:

  • DNS. "Point quietferns.dev at 203.0.113.10" creates the A record. "What records does it have?" lists them.
  • Email. Enable the domain, add a mailbox, and the anti-spam records publish themselves.
  • Renewals. "Which of my domains expire in the next 60 days?" is a question Claude can now answer from your actual account.
  • Transfers. Move a domain in from another registrar with its auth code.
  • Servers. Order a VPS, pick the region, and have an app deployed onto it.

That is 106 tools altogether. The full catalog lists them if you want to see the shape of it.

Worth knowing before you start

Availability and price are separate things, and a name can be both free and absurd. Registries hold back short generic words as premium names, occasionally at several thousand a year. Claude reads both fields and will say so, but if a name looks suspiciously good for what it is, ask what it costs before you get attached to it.

Minimum terms catch people out too. A .ai registration is two years rather than one, so the smallest purchase is $160.60 instead of $80.30. Asking for the total rather than the yearly rate avoids the surprise.

And registration is one of the few things online with no undo. A typo is not refundable, which is the real reason the confirmation step exists, so it repays actually reading it.

If it does not work

Almost every failure is one of three things. The connector is not enabled for the conversation, so check the attachments menu. The server URL has a typo, and it needs to be https://be.osir.com/mcp/http exactly. Or you asked for something account-specific before signing in, in which case Claude will offer the sign-in link rather than failing.

FAQ

Can Claude actually register a domain?

Yes, with a connector. On its own Claude can suggest names but cannot check availability or buy anything, because it has no link to a registry.

Do I need a paid Claude plan?

No. Remote connectors work on every plan including free. This differs from ChatGPT, where custom connectors need a paid plan.

Do I need an OSIR account before I start?

No. Searching and pricing are anonymous. You sign in only when you buy or manage something, and it happens inside the chat.

Can Claude spend my money without asking?

No. Every paid action stops and shows you an itemised total, and nothing executes until you confirm. There is no way to switch that off.

What does it cost to use the connector?

Nothing. You pay for domains and services at the normal price. Quoted totals include the $0.20 per year ICANN fee on gTLDs and payment processing of 3% or $0.30, whichever is greater.

Can it manage domains I already own?

Yes, once you sign in: list them, check expiry, renew, change DNS, update nameservers, toggle privacy. You can also transfer domains in from another registrar.

Is it safe to connect a registrar to Claude?

Lookups need no account at all, so you can try it before signing in to anything. Beyond that, every action that spends money or deletes something requires your explicit confirmation, everything is recorded in your audit trail, and you can revoke the session whenever you like.
